Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane reflects on rookie WR Keon Coleman’s early development following 2024 mandatory minicamp

For Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman, nothing’s going to be given, with everything to earn in front of him. Adapting to play professional football at the pinnacle of the sport is no small feat for anyone. It takes time to acclimate in all aspects, from weight training, to time management, playbooks, on-field nuances, rules, and more. That’s all while trying to gain and maintain an edge over your teammates hungry to supplant you and those outside the organization ready to remind you of their talents.

On Thursday Bills general manager Brandon Beane spent time with members of the media who huddled around him inside the team’s field house. Among the myriad of questions lobbed to Beane, one that stood out asked Beane to reflect on what he’s seen of Keon Coleman to this point in the offseason.

Josh Reed, WIVB Sports Director Josh Reed’s query allowed for Brandon Beane to provided a bit more in the way of candid conversation, and there are plenty of people standing on social media ledges over his response.

“I think Keon’s worked hard, and like anything... uh college playbook versus an NFL playbook, big difference, uh the verbiage, where he’s lining up, uh the sight adjust — all the variances he’s gotta do. Even just what we ask in the run game of our guys, I don’t know specifically what he was asked there. Some schools are, you know there’s very little — it’s just like if it’s not a pass play, take a play off. Uh... that’s not, that’s not here. He’s got to be involved in all phases of our offense so... But I see a guy who’s working hard, who’s competitive. You guys have got to know his personality, that’s... he’s genuine, that’s truly who he is. And like anything, he’s gonna have bumps in the road. He’s a rookie and I think we all need to understand that, but I think him and Josh are working on that rapport that’s going to be necessary between quarterback and receiver.”

You can take from Beane’s comments what you prefer, but it would appear as though he’s expecting nothing short of greatness out of Keon Coleman, and the rookie wide receiver will have to earn everything sent his way.

Humble and hungry, with everything to prove. That’s a recipe for success.
